Master program of Control Engineering

 I.                Program Overview

This program aims to develop senior engineering talents professional in the control field, such as theory and technology in automated detection, research and development and design of computer detection and control system, and integration of management and control. During this process, students will:

1. Learn and know the Chinese culture and characteristics of the country; comply with national and international laws and regulations, and establish the scientific outlook on development; have noble scientific ethics and good spirit of cooperation; be enthusiastic about science, have nice behavior, and serve the international modernization actively when necessary.

2. Master solid fundamental theory and systematic expertise in control science, detection technology, information processing, intelligent control, instruments and meters, and management technology; have certain knowledge in analysis and design of control system, theory and methods in automated detection and signal processing, principle and application of automation instruments, computer control technology, system design technology, and integration of management and control; be competent to do research and development of technology, use instruments, implement and manage control projects, and gain ability to teach, do research and other practical work in the field related to this sub-discipline.

3. Have team work spirit and credit awareness, and have strong creative sprit and innovative ability.

 

II.             Research Interests

Control engineering is a discipline that takes integrated control system of management and control in engineering field as the primary target, use modern mathematical methods and computer science to study the theory of system modeling, analysis, control, design and realization. It is also an important engineering field which meets the increasing demand of automation and intelligence in modern industry, agriculture and other social economic field. The main research interests include but not limited to the following aspects:

1. System intelligent control and prediction method

Aiming at the key problem in measurement and prediction technology in industrial production, environment safety and logistics system, use a combination of theory and methodologies in intelligent control technology, detection technology, predictive control, to investigate related theory and methods of intelligent measurement, prediction and early-warning, and solve the hot issue of the integration of management and control in industrial production, environment safety and logistics system.

2. Technology for food safety detection

Aiming at fast and non-destructive technology in food safety detection, with the photoelectric non-destructive detection technology and information transmission and processing technology, solve quality feature extraction of agriculture and sideline products, as well as related problems on characteristics extraction, detection and identification of pesticide residue on agriculture products.

3. Modern measurement and control technology and instruments

This direction mainly carries out design and applied research on iot(internet of things)–based automated detection and intelligent control instrument, together with various automation equipment. With a comprehensive use of related theory and technology in informatics and control, study fusion of network informatics technology and measurement and control technology, as well as the IoT-based technology on remote monitoring and control of network environment.

 

III.           Educational System and Duration of Study

This is a two-year degree. If necessary, the duration of study could be extended to no more than four years.

 

IV.           Training Mode

1. The instructor will make personalized training plan according to specific conditions of the students, based on requirements in this program and the principle of teaching students in accordance with their aptitude.

2. In this program, course study will be more emphasized during the training process, while writing paper is as of assist (or in the way that course study, practical internship and thesis work are combined). Course study is mainly within the university.

3. Students in this program all have to attend a three-month practical internship, which has close relationship to course study. It could either be in the laboratory assigned by the instructor, or utilize the external professional joint training base.

 

V.              Courses and requirement on credits

1. Courses and corresponding credits

Total credits that students need to obtain should be no less than 31 credits, including: common fundamental courses for 8 credits; specialized fundamental courses for 6 credits; specialized core courses for 6 credits; specialized elective courses for 4 credits; practical training for 1 credit, and internship for 6 credits.

2. Hours requirement on practical internship

Hours spent on practical internship should be no less than 3 months (108 hours), and correspond to 6 credits.

       

VI.           Internship

Internship could be either centralized or segmented, and postgraduates could choose to attend it within the university or in external joint training base. Under the guidance of internal and external instructors, postgraduates need to make and submit internship plan, fill in the internship record, write summary report. When all these work are completed and passed, corresponding credits will be awarded.

 

VII.         Thesis

The thesis is an important part of postgraduate training. Through the thesis-related work, students could be engaged in scientific research, learn to work independently, improve the ability of analysis, synthesis, finding and solving problems, and a pragmatic style of work and a rigorous and practical attitude toward research can also be developed.

1. Topic selection

The topic of the master thesis should be directly from practical production in control engineering field or have specific engineering background and application value, and it is better to be close to scientific research project or technical challenge of technical reform, innovation and introduction in related industry. The topic could be research and development of new technology, processes, equipment, materials and products, and it could focus on research, development, design or experiment.

2. Thesis proposal

Student should start working on the thesis under the guidance of the instructor before the third semester ends, and finish the proposal based on the literature review and related investigations. The proposal mainly includes background and motivation, brief literature review, research plan and objective, principal theoretical and technical challenges and proposed solutions. The proposal should be presented in public within the discipline. Thesis content could be about engineering design and research, technical research or scheme study on technical reform, development of engineering software or application software, and engineering management.

3. In-process inspection

The in-process inspection will be implemented in the mid-term of the fourth semester.

4. Content and form of the thesis

Content in the thesis should has high application value in solving practical problems in control engineering field. Form of the thesis could be any of research paper, technical report, engineering design and investigation report on special issue. The thesis must be finished independently by the student himself under the guidance of the instructor, and it should reflect certain workload of the student. After the topic is confirmed, time spent on related work should be around half a year. The thesis needs to be with reliable information, correct theory and clear thinking, understanding of the latest achievements in related research expertise and direction and new insights on the research topic are expected, and new achievements that student obtained during the research process should also be included. Thesis writing must conform to the ‘requirements on master thesis format in Beijing Technology and Business University. Aiming to become the outstanding master thesis of the university or Beijing City, the quality of thesis should be focused on to increase.

5. If the thesis is written in English, it must include a Chinese abstract.

6. Thesis defense and degree application

The thesis needs to pass the duplicate checking before the review process, and the review work will be done by two internal or external teachers with senior professional title. All the postgraduates must attend oral defense, which experts with senior professional titles in related industrial field should join as well.
