School Overview

School of Computer and Information Engineering offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs that started in 1980 and 1981 respectively. There are about 1744 undergraduates and 207 postgraduates studying in the school now. The school has four departments, which are the Department of Computer Science, the Department of Automation, the Department of Electronics and Information, the Department of Information Management. It also has a teaching and experiment center and several outside school practice bases. There are eight undergraduate majors which are Computer Science and Technology, Software Engineering, Automation, Electrical Engineering and Automation, Information Engineering, Electronic Science and Technology, Information Management and Information System, and Electronic Business. The school possesses three primary discipline master’s degree authorization including Computer Science and Technology, Control Science and Engineering, Management Science and Engineering, and three engineering master’s degree authorization including Control Engineering (Professional Degree), Computer Technology (Professional Degree), Logistics Engineering (Professional Degree). In addition, Computer Application Technology is the Beijing mainly constructed discipline and Control Science and Engineering is the school’s mainly constructed discipline which belongs to Key Academic disciplines of Ministry of Light Industry.

The school currently has three municipal platform, namely Beijing Key Laboratory Big Data Technology for Food Safety, Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Educational Institutions in Beijing - Experimental Teaching Center for Computer and Information Engineering, Beijing outside school training base - the multi-dimensional and whole process off-campus talents training base in Beijing Technology and Business University. Beijing Key Laboratory Big Data Technology for Food Safety was identified in May 2015 by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Science and Technology, which aims to carry out high-level basic research and applied research, gather and nurture technological talents, carry out academic exchanges and promote the application and development of big data technology in the field of food safety to provide technical support for solving the key issues in people's livelihood in Beijing around key big data technology of food safety. The main research directions are: (1) multi-source data acquisition and integration of food safety; (2) distributed computing and data warehouse of food safety; (3) big data mining and visualization analysis of food safety. Computer and Information Engineering Experimental Teaching Center aims at accommodating the economic and social development needs of the national capital, and cultivating students' innovative spirit and practical ability, which fits requirements for development and reform of Beijing higher education to encourage cross-discipline integration. Besides, it can play an active role in college students’ innovation and entrepreneurship education and cross training for high level talents, make rich achievements in experimental teaching, management, resources, team, information technology and other aspects, and be a demonstration and leading role. The multi-dimensional and whole process off-campus talents training base in Beijing Technology and Business University is a municipal school training base which is cooperatively established by our school and Ufida Seentao Technology CO, LTD. Since 2005, our school has been cooperating with Seentao to establish off-campus practice base, and after 10 years of development, the base has gradually explored a set of multi-dimensional and multi-level cooperating ways in which students play the leading role and improving students' employability and entrepreneurial abilities is taken as a guide, based on professional courses, project and both teachers participating.

The school is featured with integration engineering and business and has developed its own distinguished experiences. In the past 30 years, the school has cultivated a large amount of excellent comprehensive applicable talents in information science and technology. Some of them have become backbone scientific researchers, chief executives of large corporations, heads of research academies and institutes, professors and scholars in universities, council chairmen of national first grade professional association, and they have made outstanding contributions to national construction. The undergraduates and postgraduates cultivated in the college are well founded in fundamental knowledge, comprehensive in major knowledge, capable in practice and well adaptable to the society. Recently, a large numbers of graduates have found their jobs in high-tech enterprises (i.e. Lenovo, IBM and Siemens), financial institutions (i.e. Bank of China, ICBC and PwC), research institutions (i.e. ISCAS and Aerospace) and government agencies. Beijing is the major employment region, and economy developed cities and areas are also hot employment choices. Moreover, some graduates are admitted by top universities at home and abroad for a further education or are recommended as postgraduates without participating in the national entrance examination.

Faculty team of school has high level and has been well structured in age, degree and rank. The faculty has become a devoted, enthusiastic, young and strong team with rich teaching experience and strong research abilities through years of practicing teaching and research. There are 123 faculty and staff including 18 professors and 50 associate professors. Among of them, 65 have Doctor’s degree, account for 67% of the total faculty. Among the teachers, there are experts that receive special allowance from the government, such as Beijing advanced workers, Beijing universities outstanding teachers, backbone teachers of universities entitled by the Ministry of Education, topnotch innovative talents of Beijing universities, Beijing "New Century Talents Project" selected candidates, youth leaders of Beijing university disciplines, Nova of  Beijing Science and Technology, Beijing top talents reserve and Beijing excellent young backbone teachers. Many of the teachers assume important posts in domestic top or second academic parties. The college actively develops the international academic exchanges. Many teachers have the experiences of learning and participating international academic exchanges in the countries such as England, America, Canada, Japan, Australia, Hungary and Germany.

In research work, by giving the full play of our disciplinary advantages and based on the academic frontier, school faculty has strengthen the ability of research and development and the capability for independent innovation, and improved the level of scientific research greatly, especially made a great breakthrough in the National Fund, National major science and technology projects, local science and research programs and enterprises commissioned research projects. In the past five years, our school faculty has finished or has been studying 2 national "Twelfth Five-year” science and technology research projects, 10 national natural fund projects, more than 30 provincial projects in several research and application fields, such as big data in food safety, water environment treatment, non-destructive identification of agricultural products, information visualization, logistics control engineering and mobile computing. The average annual research funding is 10 million yuan. The school has gained 1 second award of national science and technology progress prize, 4 provincial and ministerial third awards, 7 association awards, more than 30 national invention patents, more than 20 utility model patents, 50 software copyrights, nearly 1000 papers which have been published in core journals, over 10 academic works and books which have been published. In addition, postgraduates and undergraduates in the college actively participated in scientific activities and practical research projects. Many students have got contests awards in Mathematics, Physics, English, Computer, Electronic Design and Robots.

The teaching lab center is the Beijing municipal experimental teaching demonstration center, which is located in Fucheng Road campus and Liangxiang campus. The center lab sets in 50 rooms, which covers an area of nearly 5308 square meters, and equipped with 7419 pieces of teaching and research equipments and 182 experimental teaching software and systems, which worth 88.83 million Yuan in total. Each lab can access to the local area network connecting to the campus network and the Internet. All labs also have control security management and registration system. Most labs possess multimedia teaching system and LED display screen information release system. The center relies on these four types of experimental platform to undertake 178 courses for both undergraduate and graduate students, including 129 experimental courses and 691 experimental projects for 42 undergraduate majors. The number of students is 13571 per year and the number of experimental hours is 446,847 per year.

As the open lab, in addition to completing the practical teaching task, each lab can also receive several activities, including students’ optional experimental practices, teachers’ scientific work, students’ practical innovation activities, professional competitions and extracurricular science and technology activities.
