The discipline direction of service design origins from the industrial design program of former Beijing Institute of Light Industry . With the rapid development of social environment and need, both the denotation and the connotation of Design discipline is developing and evolving . Based on Beijing, within the context of superiority subjects of light industry and business of BTBU, the product design program proposed service design as the developing direction for design discipline in BTBU . With faculty of product design program as the main part of the team, application researches and teaching practices have been launched.

After more than 4 years’ development, the team of service design has been expanded to more than 20 people, with the faculty from visual communication design program and digital media art program included. We developed a undergraduate curriculum system and teaching mode aiming at the cultivation of professional designers who can create new products or services integrating design, user, business and technology. Beijing municipal college on-campus and off-campus practice centers have been constructed. ‘Practice Education Reform of Design Education Based on Off-campus Training Base’ won the second prize of education and teaching achievementawards of Beijing. ‘Service-design-oriented product design education reform andpractice’ was awarded as Demonstration Program of BTBU. Undergraduates instructed by faculty have won more than 10 awards including Red Rot Award, IF Award, Red Star Award etc. Several service design related research projects have been finished, including 6 province funded researches and more than 20 design projects. More than 20 academic papers and more than 10 textbooks and monographs have been published.With consistent working, MFA program has been approved in 2016.
