Introduction to Journalism

   Journalism Department of BTBU was founded in 1997, has initiated the business news direction in China. The department devotes itself to cultivate compound and applied talents with active thinking, Wide Vision, being familiar with economy and management, proficient in Omnimedia communication skills and good at economic reporting, responsible to the society and having excellent capability in interpersonal and social activities. In 2008, Journalism program was honored with Beijing characteristic program. In 2011, the teaching system of the economic news program was awarded national teaching reform and innovation project for Journalism and Communication by Commission of Journalism Teaching Instruction of the Ministry of Education and Journalism and Communication Committee of Higher Education Academy of China. In 2013, the teaching system was awarded the second prize of higher education teaching achievements of Beijing Municipality. In 2014, the program was classified as the comprehensive innovation and exemplary program of undergraduate-education in BTBU.
Journalism Department has 15 full-time teachers, including two professors, 10 associate professors and three lecturers. 13 got PhD. 12 of them have foreign visiting, training or study experiences. The faculty of Journalism with rich experience and academic competence, have achieved second prize of Beijing research achievements in philosophy and social sciences for twice and hosted more than 20  projects, such as Projects of the National Social Science Foundation of China , humanities and social sciences research projects of Ministry of Education, projects of Beijing philosophy and social sciences foundation, humanities & social sciences projects of  national SARFT, qualified personnel development program of Beijing SARFT and so on. The department has held many sessions of national economic news reform and development seminars and national undergraduate economic news works contests which exerted   favorable social impact social influence.

Section I Introduction to Program
 The Journalism Program of BTBU, founded in 1997, has initiated the business news direction in China. The Program was rated as the prior developing subject of BTBU in 2006, and was honored with Beijing characteristic program in 2008. In 2014, the program was classified as the comprehensive innovation and exemplary program of undergraduate-education in BTBU. The Journalism Department has15 full-time teachers, including two professors, 10 associateprofessors and three lecturers. 13 got PhD, two are “Beijing young and middle-aged backbone teachers” and one “Beijing outstanding young scholars” .12 of them have foreign visiting, training or study experiences. The Department devotess  itselfto cultivate compound and applied talents, proficientin economic and news, and adapting with Omnimedia transmission. In 2011, the teaching system of the economic news program was awarded national teaching reform and innovation project for Journalism and Communication by Commission of Journalism Teaching Instruction of the Ministry of Education and Journalism and Communication Committee of Higher Education Academy of China. The economic news teaching system with its characteristics of differentiation, integration and butt-joint was awarded higher education teaching achievements of Beijing Municipality.
 
Section II Training Objective
Depending on the advantages of economics and management of BTBU, the program adapts to the need of social development and media evolution, cultivates inter-disciplinary and applied talents with compound knowledge structure, who are familiar with modern economic and management, and master omnimedia news communication rules. The talents with proficient writing skills, broad culturalhorizon, high social responsibility and ability in social activity, can perceive changes of social economics, and are good at economic news reporting. Graduates of this program can work for journalism and communication agencies such as newspaper offices, radio or TV stations, news agencies or network media, etc. Besides, they can also work for governmental organizations, enterprises and public institutions. They can choose to proceed with the master’s degree and master-doctor continuous study at home and abroad.
 
1.      Training Demands
Students must have the knowledge and competence as follows by majoring in this Specialty:
(1) Familiar with policies, guidelines and relevantlaws andregulations for news and communication, having high responsibility and professionalethics;
(2) Mastering basic theories and knowledge of journalism, and knowing the operation mechanism, development and future trend;
(3) Having proficient skills both for traditional news interview, writing and review and for omnimedia, applying the means of omnimedia communication and adapting to the interview and editing needs of different media forms.
(4) Mastering the basic knowledge of economics and management, perceiving the changes of social economic development, and having the ability of economic information analysis and economic news reporting;
(5) Having integrated cultural knowledge, international vision and social competitive power;
(6) Having the ability of communication, social activity, independent study, sustainable development and scientific research.
2.      Training Path
  Depending on the subject advantages of BTBU and keeping the talent training principles of “centered on the economic news characteristics and oriented on diversifiedcompetition ability training”, the program deepens the reform and innovation of inter-disciplinary and applicable talents cultivations model, which combines the students self-learning with the teacher’s guidance before, middle and after class, course practical training with simulation exercise together. It forms the talents cultivation path of differentiation, integration and butt-joint.
(1) Depending on the subject advantages of the university, taking the specialty advantages and  differentiatedcompetition as the idea, positioning the professional running and talents cultivation, reinforcing the practicability and pertinence of the courses, cultivating inter-disciplinary and applicable talents for economic news.
(2) Guided by the training objectives, constructing the courses system of strong foundation, composite knowledge, comprehensive competence, differentiated competition, extended development, cultivating students’ comprehensive knowledge, comprehensive knowledge structure, omnimedia professional skills and economic news reporting ability.
(3) Combining the students ' self-learning and the teacher’s guidance, exploring the model innovation of course teaching, cultivate students’ ability of self-learning and sustainable development.
(4) Depending on the three-dimensional and comprehensive practice teaching system, combing the course practical training and simulation training, the campus practice and media practice, and employing the industry delegates to teach or give a lecture to broaden students’ horizon and exercise their professional skills of journalism.
(5) Carrying out the educational system of serial and professional guidance and the tutoring mechanism of individualization tutor to reinforce the interaction of teachers and students and advance the development of students.
(6) Promoting students’ theoretical attainment and open thinking and cultivating their problematic consciousness and basic ability of science research through the platform of reading notes, course thesis, social survey and graduate thesis.
 
Section III Main Courses
Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Chinese and western Journalism history, Introduction to Journalism, Introduction to Communications, Introduction to  New Media, News interview and writing, News editing and review, Broadcastingnews, Convergence Journalism Reporting, Economic News Reporting, Media Management and Operation.
 
Section IV Practical Characteristics
Combining theoretical with practical courses, depending on the platform of courses practice, simulation training and media practice, the program constructs comprehensive practice teaching system of three-dimensional step by step and penetratively. The Courses practice platform cultivates the professional basic skills, omnimedia professional skills and economic news reporting skills progressively. The simulation training platform focuses on the simulative editorial department and depends on the E-journal to conduct situational training to students’ omnimedia professional skills including words, pictures, and video. The media practice platform depends on the intramural and external-campus media, and combines the professional practice and graduate practice to train students’ professional competence.
1. The course practice includes News Interview and Editing, Photography and video editing, Broadcastingnews,Convergence Journalism Reporting, and Economic News Reporting and so on.
2. The simulation training platform adopt the practice model of learner-centered and  focusing on the simulative editorial department to  conduct the simulation training of comprehensive and professional skills and construct the omnimedia professional skills platform of focusing the events and depending on the simulation media.
3. Carry out social survey, professional practice and graduate practice. Guide students to conduct social survey and write survey report. Guide students to take part in professional practice and graduate practice during the summer vacation and the 8 weeks in the 8th term to train students in media agency and meet the needs and demands of talents in media industry.
 
Section V Credit and Credit Hours
Students must complete 137 credits to graduate.
The credit of the course teaching in the first classroom is 120. The proportion of Liberal Education Courses and Professional Education Courses is 1:2.1.The proportion of selective courses to courses teaching is 24.8%. The credit of concentrated practical teaching is 9, and the proportion of practical teaching and theoretical teaching is 3.1:6.9.
The credit of the teaching in the second classroom is 8.
 
Section VI Length of Schooling and Degree
Length of study: Four Years
Degree awarded: Awarding the bachelor's degree to those who match the condition.
