Brief Introduction of Chinese Language & Literature Department

The Chinese Language & Literature Department consists of eleven teachers among who there are eight associate professors. Three teachers are currently serving as the Director of Graduate Studies. Eight teachers received their Ph.D. of Literature from Peking University, Beijing Normal University, Capital Normal University, and Beijing Language & Culture University, etc. They specialize in pre-modern and modern Chinese literature and culture, foreign literature, literature and art, and linguistics & applied linguistics.

The Chinese Language & Literature Department assumes the teaching task of Chinese compulsory courses for full-time undergraduates of the university as well as Chinese language courses for foreign students. Besides, for full-time undergraduates and graduates’ liberal education, the Department offers a series of optional courses on Introduction to Chinese Classics, Chinese Poetry Culture, Modern Chinese Literature, Introduction to Western Literature Masterpiece, Introduction to Classics of 21st Century, Literature and Life, Aesthetics, History and Culture of Film, Chinese Culture, Chinese Traditional Culture and Health Maintenance, Communication and Writing, Hard-tipped Pen Calligraphy, etc.

In the aspect of teaching, teachers from Chinese Language & Literature Department are always hardworking and aggressive. Given that Chinese courses as the core, to further meet needs of other subjects’ students, Chinese Language & Literature Department endeavors to prompt a connecting point between Chinese subject and any other discipline, such as Journalism and Communication, Business, and Engineering. In the guidance of this teaching thought, teachers of Chinese Language & Literature Department probe into teaching materials and theory, which equips them with the most appropriate method on teaching.

Chinese Language & Literature Department has a good tradition of academic research. In the past five years, 100 papers and 10 kinds of textbooks have been published, 10 provincial and school-level government sponsored research projects and 10 enterprise sponsored research projects have been set up. Among published papers, 60 were accepted by core journals and 30 by CSSCI source journals. As for the textbooks, some of them are of provincial or school-level while some are in the series of Confronting 21 Century Textbook.

Also, in the past five years, five teachers were awarded first or second prize in teaching competition of school-level, ranking the first in the university. It is unprecedented that one teacher won second prize in Beijing Young Teacher’s Basic Teaching Skill Competition. Two teachers, respectively, won the first and second prize in the school-level teaching skill competition for young teachers. Three teachers were separately awarded second prize for excellent teaching effect. Three teachers won second and third prize for excellent performance in their research field. It is worth noting that two teachers won the Excellence Award in the Innovation-Cup Multimedia Courseware Design and Micro-course Competition among universities owned by the municipal government of Beijing.

Chinese Department seeks for the fusion with core majors of the department wherein and opens up new research fields which are attributed to intersection of Chinese Language & Literature and Journalism & Communication. There are three teachers serving as the Director of Graduate Studies on Brand Communication.

Furthermore, taking humanistic curriculum as its core, Chinese Language & Literature Department plays a positive role in construction of campus culture. It not only helps plan and prepare for university’s publicity and club activity, but also devotes itself to cultivating profound humanistic connotations for the university which is on its way to the first-class.
